Though 24-hour time is widely used all over the world today, 24-hour mechanical Swiss watches are seldom seen. The reimagined ‘Early Bird’ EB-24 has an automatic, 24-hour movement, meaning unlike a conventional watch, the hour hand only completes a single revolution in a full day. This feature allows the wearer to view all 24 hours of the day at a glance while simultaneously tracking a second time zone, an indispensable feature for pilots, international travellers and professionals communicating across continents.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003ehe Intelsat I, or ‘Early Bird’ as it is better known, was the world’s first geosynchronous communications satellite, and handled all commercial telecommunications transmissions between Europe and North America between 1965 and 1969. This included the live transoceanic TV coverage of the Gemini 6 splashdown; footage of the Apollo 11 moon landing; and the first ever performance of ‘All You Need Is Love’ by The Beatles, live to a global audience of 700 million people. Early Bird changed humanity’s relationship with distance. It made the Atlantic feel smaller by enabling near-instantaneous communications between continents. Before Early Bird, the world was connected by cables. After Early Bird, it was connected through space. It became one of the defining technological milestones of the twentieth century. The Early Bird satellite was decommissioned in 1969, but it remains in silent in orbit today, more than half a century after its launch.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAlbert Wajs wanted to pay tribute to this landmark moment of modern engineering by creating a watch in its honour. The 24-hour ‘military-time’ dial reflects the time taken for the satellite to complete one orbit of the Earth. The blue-and-red metallic bezel echoed the colours of the satellite itself.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eHowever, unlike its namesake, the Ollech \u0026amp; Wajs Early Bird was not made for outer space. It was created specifically for military personnel, particularly pilots and radio operators, for whom a 24-hour ‘military-time’ dial would be invaluable. Most of the original Early Birds were ordered direct from Zurich via adverts in black-and-white newspapers like the Army Times. The new owners were pleasantly surprised when the watch arrived to see that it had a blue-and-red bezel, not grey tone as the ads suggested.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eOf all the watches that carried the OW monogram, the Early Bird is said to be Albert Wajs’s personal favourite. Since the advent of the electronic calculator, few people have. However, before the 70s, slide rules were used for everyday arithmetic, such as calculating ratios, percentages, unit conversions, multiplication, and division. From the mid-century, wristwatches with miniature slide rule scales were used by scientists, engineers, and pilots to calculate things like fuel consumption, airspeed, ground speed, and the rate of climb or descent. Throughout the 60s Slide rule watches were ubiquitous amongst workforces in the burgeoning field of ‘aerospace engineering’, from NASA to General Electric. Ollech \u0026amp; Wajs ‘Selectron Computers’ were among the most popular slide rule watches of this period. Back then, the word ‘computer’ described a person who carried out calculations or computations, rather than a programmable machine capable of processing digital data.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThe OW P-104 Selectron shares many of the basic characteristics of its historic forebears. It has a bi-directional bezel with logarithmic scales that can perform a multitude of calculations with a single rotation. It’s faster than a so called smartwatch, doesn’t require a battery and can be used underwater, up to 300m if necessary (that really is smart!)\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe high contrast dial, which evokes the stark simplicity of cockpit instrumentation, features ivory indices and a vivid orange Super-LumiNova® handset, for maximum visibility in low light. The regimental-style RAF strap is another nod to Selectron’s historical links to military aviation. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eInside the OW P-104 Selectron is OW’s own inimitable bespoke Soprod Newton Precision P092. This outstanding automatic calibre is independently tested for dependability and durability at the internationally renown Laboratoire Dubois in Chaux-de-Fonds. It is modified to OW’s specifications and adjusted in five positions, the movement has been finished in accordance with our rugged aesthetics, and ‘OW Zurich 1956’ is engraved into the nickel-plated base, on which sits a co-designed, custom rotor in the shape of the OW marque.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAdditionally we offer a COSC-certified version of the watch which comes with official papers from Contrôle Officiel Suisse des Chronomètres (COSC), the Swiss Official Chronometer Testing Institute.
