The first ever Seiko 5 watch, Seiko Sportmatic 5, was born in 1963. It was Seiko's and Japan's first ever automatic day-date watch. ''5'' represented the promise that every Seiko 5 watch would have five key attributes.
Taken together and in combination with the then new mainspring and shock resistance system, these features gave Seiko 5 its distinctive appearance and its strength.

- The off-white dial resembles the urethane material of a skateboard wheel
- The calf belt resembles the wood-grained skateboard deck
- The highlight of the design is the dial center, made in the image of a skateboard's bearing
- The index markers are designed in the image of axle nuts that connect the wheels to the truck
- The caseback displays Evisen logo's iconic Samurai helmet and a serial number from 0001/1500 to 1500/1500
